Agroforestry Project “Mi Perú”

Catacaos, Piura - PERU

Our 2025–2028 investment program includes the establishment of a 500-hectare agroforestry system for cacao. This productive model integrates the cultivation of fine-flavored cacao grown under the shade of moringa oleifera (drumstick tree) and guava trees, along with intercropping cowpea and mung beans. This approach allows for income diversification, soil enrichment, and the optimization of different crop cycles.

Project Scope

Our agroforestry approach ensures not only the environmental sustainability of the system but also its economic stability. In the proposed agroforestry project, each of the included crops has distinct characteristics in terms of growth cycle, lifespan, and replanting frequency, enabling a strategic, phased plan that combines short-, medium, and long-term production.

Cowpea, a short-cycle crop, has a vegetative period of 3 months. Its annual nature requires replanting in every growing season, making it ideal for frequent rotations and rapid soil utilization, especially during the early stages of the system.

Mung beans, like cowpea, have a 3-month vegetative period and require replanting in each growing season. Both types of beans are suitable for intercropping, contributing to soil fertility and generating early income.

Moringa is a fast-growing perennial crop that can begin producing leaves within 2 to 3 months after planting, and fruits between 6 and 8 months. Its lifespan can exceed 20 years, and it does not require constant replanting, as it regenerates easily through pruning. Additionally, it plays a key role as a temporary shade species for cacao development, while also providing commercial value and improving soil structure.

Fine-flavored cacao requires a longer vegetative period, starting commercial production in the third year of cultivation. Cacao has a seasonal production cycle with two harvests per year, allowing for sustained long-term income planning.
